Engineering, from drawingto installation

Alef Engineering designs machines, products and automation systems in Nairobi, manages their fabrication and installation, and builds hardware of its own.

We design and prototype in

  • SOLIDWORKS
  • Autodesk Fusion
  • KiCad
  • Raspberry Pi

You don't need an engineering department to build good equipment. You need an engineer who draws it properly and stays on the job until it runs.

What we do for clients

Engineering design

Machines, equipment, enclosures and assemblies, delivered as 3D models and manufacturing drawings that a workshop can quote and build from without guesswork.

Project delivery

Bring your own design and we manage production, or let us design it and run the whole job: sourcing, workshop coordination, testing and installation, with one point of contact.

From approval to site

  1. Drawings approved
  2. Materials ordered
  3. Parts fabricated
  4. Assembled and tested
  5. Installed on site

Training

Practical courses in CAD, engineering drawings, design for manufacture and project planning, for in-house teams and graduate engineers. Much of the learning happens in reviews of real drawings.

Drawing review

  1. 1Add a tolerance to the Ø84 bore.
  2. 2Give the bolt holes a position tolerance.
  3. 3Detail the weld preparation on the neck.

Our own designs

Alef builds hardware of its own as well as for clients. These are three of our current designs, each a full CAD model.

The biometric scanner holder on a plain studio surface

Biometric scanner holder

A desk cradle that holds a USB fingerprint scanner at 15° to the person using it. The front wall drops away for the finger, the cable leaves through the back, and a locking bar with security screws keeps the scanner on the counter.

Fits
Scanners up to 67 × 96 mm
Material
PA12 nylon or acetal
Process
SLS printing or CNC machining

Parallel gripper

A two-finger gripper for pick-and-place cells. One motor drives both jaws through a pinion and two racks, so the jaws always close on the centre line.

Rails
Twin Ø8 mm steel
Body
6061 aluminium
Pads
TPU, replaceable

Field sensor enclosure

A sealed housing for telemetry electronics on water and irrigation sites, with a gasketed lid on four captive screws, two M16 cable glands and wall-mount tabs.

Every part specified, sourced and checked before it reaches site.

A design is only finished when someone can buy and build it. Each one we hand over comes with the drawings, the parts list and the materials spelled out.

Bring us in at any stage

Concept and design

We turn requirements into concepts, 3D models and manufacturing drawings that a workshop can quote and build from.

Start here with an idea or a problem.

How a project starts

  1. 01

    Send the brief

A sketch, photos, drawings or a few lines on the problem, with quantities and where it will be installed.

  2. 02

    Questions and a quote

We reply within two working days with what we need to know and a quote for the first stage.

  3. 03

    Design reviews

You see the model and drawings at each review and sign off before anything is made.

  4. 04

    Build and handover

We manage fabrication and installation and hand over drawings and manuals to your team.

Businesses without an engineering team

Hire an engineer for the project instead of the year. We take one-off designs, changes to equipment you already run, and small production runs.

Companies outsourcing engineering work

Extra design capacity when your team is fully booked, specialist mechatronics and controls work, or a project manager to run fabrication with your vendors.

Led by Clayton Opio

Clayton is a mechanical engineer trained at the Technical University of Kenya. He has designed equipment and assemblies in SolidWorks at Proteq Automation, and built control circuits and Fusion 360 enclosures for smart water meters and dispensers at Ubuntu WaterHub Africa.

Time in technical sales at Tata Kenya taught him how equipment is bought, run and supported after handover. He started Alef to design that equipment properly, and to build hardware of its own.

Tell us what you need built

Send a sketch, drawings or a short description of the problem. We reply within two working days with questions or a quote.
